No Monday blues today

In theory a loss Saturday should make this a sad Monday but we are still at the top of the table and things are still looking good. 2 B was never going to be a walk in the park. CD Tenerife has changed nearly all their players and their coach. Whether this was the right decision or not only time will tell. The players was inevitable as they were not affordable and as CDT had been at least in the 2A league for the last 25 years there was no addition in their contract for what they would be paid if the team were relegated. As for the coach, I am not sure if the discussion helps. When Amaral was sacked there were fans who felt it was the right decision and some who didn't. That's the way opinions go. Sergio Aragoneses said yesterday on the club website, "There is a lot of pressure and you need to be able to take this". Lets hope he will help the other players take this responsibility. A player who has been present for two promotion years with CD Tenerife can surely make the difference and lead the other players through the stress this year may bring. Comments on the game on Saturday included Calderon: “We started well, although we didn't create many chances. We could have scored with the penalty, and then they did just that. In the second half we didn't find our way. We were missing something. We didn't give our rival any difficulties but also they gave us no problems". Ferrán Tacón: “This Sunday we need to show another side of the team and play differently to today". David Medina: “We are sad, but we need to hold onto the good things. We played properly and were a good side. We didn't score from the penalty but the team kept trying. The group wants to play well and hope to win the next game". Kiko Raton: “Sometimes help isn't there and things don't go your way. The stress of needing to win sometimes means you can't move the ball out of mid-field. We need to correct our mistakes and move forward. In spite of losing we played better than other games". Abel: “We are sad as we lost but now we need to think about the next game. A draw would have been fairer. In football the little things make a difference. they scored from their penalty and we didn't. I wasn't very good neither with the ball nor when our opponents had the ball. I am going to keep working so the coach will have faith in me". Perhaps the photo of the weekend was Mana Singer in a CD Tenerife shirt at the concert Saturday night in The Heliodoro stadium. The grass was apparently well protected and there is expected to be no problem with the pitch for the game this Sunday.
All the youth teams who played at the weekend all managed to gain points: Third División CD Tenerife B-Atl. Victoria 2-2 División H. Storm in a teacup?

The local press was this morning full of how Luna was sent away from training yesterday early and after the session both Calderon and Cordero talked to him. Much was made of this event and what might happen in the future. This morning after todays training session Luna was one of the players interviewed, At this press event he stated he felt, "very comfortable, training well and helping my companions when it is not my turn to play. I think the coach is doing a great job. I hope to get the chance to play but I am not surprised that I don't play right now as the team have been winning. The important factor is the team and right now they have four wins and a draw. I need to keep working and correct my mistakes. It is normal that once you lose your place in the team that it is hard to make a space later. This happens everywhere. Added to this there are only 16 places and some very good players. I need to wait for my chances and try to make the most of them". The other player interviewed was Ferran Tacon, the Catalan midfielder talked about the game last weekend saying, "We need to hold on to the first 70 minutes and ask ourselves what happened in the last 20 minutes of the game. To repeat the things we did well and correct the mistakes we made towards the end of the match". He then continued talking about the team, "We need to play better and know that even if the score is in our favor we need to fight on. We need to hold onto the first half in Albacete and the 70 minutes at home against Coruxo" he added. To finish Ferran Tacon talked about the game this Saturday against Getafe B, "They are a team who try to play well, the play the gball and make the most of their chances. The chance to play in the Coliseo is an advantage for us and I hope the game will go our way. We need to keep winning".

Agenda for the week 19 - 24 September 2011

With no day off this week and a 45 minute team talk before yesterday's session, Calderon clearly takes Saturdays game very seriously.

CD Tenerife won another game.

Monday again and although it was not a good win still the team won and added three points to their total. The sad thing about the game was that the team was whistled at from about 15 minutes before the end of the game. The team were somewhat shocked with this but in some way I can see the fans point of view. The fans have seen two relegations one after another and have generally stood quietly and absorbed this. This year it seems that they will stand for nothing but continualy effort. The team with the goal just after half time and a man extra, realaxed and stood back. And the fans didn't like this.
The goal was scored by Ruben Rosquete who hasn't played in the Heliodoro with the first team for several years. He came on last week in Albacete and played well and the coach allowed him to start on Sunday. A young player who came up through the youth teams in Tenerife and  played for Murcia in 2 B last year. A team who went back up to 2A after only one season in semi-pro football. This means at least one player in the squad has seen a team go back up to 2A.
There were over 10,000 fans in the stadium supporting the team in the sun on a Sunday morning.

Monday happiness

Another happy Monday, this could become adictive. Although the win wasn't easy the CD Tenerife players held on in the second half whilst they were struggling to re-find their feet to keep the win and bring the three points home. Talking to friends last night the lookd at me in amazement as I tried to explain that this would not have been so important had we lost but the win was one of those which could trun the championship. When it comes to the end a win in Albacete could mean the difference between group winners or not. Spanish table position depends on how you played against each other not goal differences. (This was how we had little change to stay up even with a win against Valencia two seasons ago). Sergio Aragoneses was outstanding yesterday and there was no chance he could have seen the goal which finally went through defender Meji's legs. As ever our real weakness is our defence. Calderon said on Friday that Luna will have to fight to get back in the starting eleven but at least that means he has a chance if he wants to make it. The blue and white player seemed very down when interviewed by the press last week, he commented, "I have been mistaken, I should have been treated like everyone else". The players in Albacete were all pleased about the result. Nico: “We suffered to win but it was woth the effort". Taratino: “I think both teams had a better half. This was a victory we had to work for. We worked hard and at the end achieved the prize". Rosquete: “I am happy we managed a win against a direct rival. Their fans helped them especially after the goal. I am also pleased to have started for the team. I still haven't scored, I had a good chance in the first half but I didn't kick it right. I hope to keep playing". Víctor Bravo: “The team worked hard and suffered for the win, especially in the second half. No on thought we would win easily but we are going home happy". Chechu Flores: “This was an important game, above all coming after the draw at home against Conquense. We won this match in a difficult arena. When we lose the ball we suffer, which is why we were so much better in the first half then the second. I am still getting fit to be at the same level as the other players". David Medina: “We knew we would suffer, but the most important thing is winning the three points. The hand ball from Calle was so clear and a victory against Albacete, a direct rival, feels great” The game next Sunday is against Coruxo who are a little side and I hope last week's draw was a wake up call that all teams have to be fought and finished off. How many people do you think will be in the stadium. I would guess we will reach 11,000 but drop me a not to tell me what you think. On the Spanish main...land

The team travelled yesterday, Friday as it was presumed that Albacete would ask for the game to be played on Saturday afternoon as their main fiesta is this weekend. But they didn't, so the game will, as planned, be played Sunday morning at 11am (10 am Canarian and UK time). Many Albacete fans have mentioned on their forums that they will be going to the match straight from the fiesta so there could be an interesting if alcoholic atmosphere. CD Tenerife trained Friday afternoon and this morning in Las Rozas the Spanish national training ground in Madrid. The only player who didn't take part in the full training session was Jorge Perona who is still recovering from injury. On his twitter account today he thanked everyone for their help in his recovery but says it wasn't to be so I guess he won't be playing. Ruben Rosquete is with the squad for the first time this season and it looks like he might get a few minutes play. Coach Calderon said Thursday in his weekly interview, "we are still trying things, including one forward as Perona may not play but the squads identity is to play with two forwards". When asked about the long weekend away, travelling Friday and returning Monday he commented "It wasn't what we expected but as a time to get used to the mainland it has fallen well. We knew there were fiestas in Albacete". When asked about Albacete who he coached last season he replied, "I have a lot of friends there but life takes you different places. This is a new stage in my life and theirs. Both team have started the season well". He continued, "we are playing to win. I am not so worried about our position in the table. Against Conquense we were missing organisation and didn't have a good time, we need to go out and recover our identity. This will be a tough game but we have the weapons to fight Albacete.". Interviewed today on the way to Albacete was CD Tenerife defender Cristobal. He was asked about the game tomorrow when he described the team as, "very involved, we know what we need to do to win the three points. The group is convinced we can do this and bring home a win". When asked what he though was the most important point to win the game he replied, "we need not to let in any goals. If the defence is coherent then the forwards can play to win". He was then asked if he felt the teams position in the table was an advantage or a disadvantage. To which he answered, "It is too early to count, the table will change a lot before it is important, still being on top is a great feeling". He finished talking about how he saw his performance so far this season saying, "This is an adaptation time. Right now we are getting to know each other and we still have a lot of work to go in the style of play etc... the team will improve".

ERE admitted

This week the could has been informed by the Canarian social security department that the ERE (compulsory redundancies) have been accepted. This leaves 10 members of staff including player Antonio Hidalgo on the dole. There are staff members on the training team who have worked for the club for over 30 years. As this was due to a financial crisis the employees will only receive twenty days pay for every year they have worked up to 12 years. Club lawyer Ángel Fernández Carrillo, stated yesterday that this was the only way they could have "saved the club". This was the easiest way that the "least damage was done" and a way "to defend the 31,000 share holders, fans and an institution whose survival is in play". Antonio Hidalgo yesterday was interviewed and said goodbye to the fans. For me he was a player who always made an effort. I was sad to see him go last time he played for CD Tenerife and am sad this time too. It is a bittersweet sadness as I don't feel his performance was what we hoped for but he was never a player who didn't try. Just this time around he couldn't make a difference. For me he will always be a blanquiazul. Players interviewed yesterday were newest arrival Chechu Flores who still hasn't played. He commented on the fans, "I have seen that CD Tenerife has a tremendous fan base and we need to make the most of this. There will be good moments and bad ones but we are all on the same side and together our objectives will be easier to achieve". When asked about the league so far the Catalan stated "the balance is positive and the team can still give amuch more. Lets see just what can be done in the coming games". Sergio Aragoneses was the second player in front of the press. He coincided in the thought that the season has been positive so far and added, "we need to keep adding points and if possible add them in threes. We need to gain confidence and correct our mistakes". The keeper from Galicia continued, " we need to improve every Sunday and try not to make mistakes, not to receive goals and make the most of our virtues. This have to be the main points". he finished.

First Draw of the season. 1-1 against Conquense

Monday morning and although the team only managed a draw they are right now group leaders.

In a game that lacked spark, the players tried all they could. The referee wasn't as accurate as could be desired but everyone keeps reminding me this is 2B. (I have seen better referees in a lowest level regional match).
The team had chances to score, in the first ten minutes Meji and Tacon  had chances and so it went on. Richi Kitoko wasn't at his best and Conquense's goal came from a mistake he made. German came on for Perona who was injured in the first half and he too didn't have the best of games.
Coach Antonio Calderon talked about how the team hadn't been accurate, he reminded that they played the cup game on Wednesday and were somewhat tired. He continued saying, "we wanted to move the bal forward fast but that isn't our game. We need to move the ball around and wait for chances". Again he thanked the fans repeating his comments from the last game, "we need to thank the fans . They helped us the whole game and this made things much more difficult for our rival".
Once more the stadium had more fans than any in our group and only Betis B had a bigger gate which I would put down to the facts that theirs was a derby against Sevilla B and the first team were not playing.
The players interviewed included Marcos  Rodriguez who talked about the group, how they worked well together and although they have made mistakes they had worked hard. German said, "Two points escaped here today but the team worked hard". Kiko Raton who scored his first offical goal of the season have stated he was, "not happy. We come losing in the cup and hoped tomake the fans happy. Looking at everything the point isn't bad and it is a shame that when I finally score it doesn't help the team".
