One goal changed our life. One goal by Eduardo Ramos in Riazor permitted CD Tenerife to stay out of relegation to the second division. This was on the 10 of June 1990. The blue and whites are going back on Saturday to the Galician stadium, that almost 20 years ago marked their resurrection.
Then CD Tenerife played for staying up in the first division against Deportivo. One header from a CD Tenerife player opened a new stage in the Tenerife history.
That goal marked a before and after. It was the end of a suffering and an entry into a happy time. The 0-1 served for the team to maintain their position in the elite. After the 0-0 from the home game played a week before in the Heliodoro.
Even if CD Tenerife had lost four times in Riazor they have never won when they were in the first division. They have drawn once and lost five times. Those four wins are long ago the first being in 23 of September in 1973, Cd Tenerife managed a 0-2 win with goals from Mauro y Gilberto.
Then ten years passed before they won again on the 25 of September in 1984, with goals from Rubén Cano y Lasaosa making the score enough to overcome the Depo resistance.
After that there was a win in the season 88-89. Guina, Rommel Fernández & Víctor scored for CD Tenerife, whilst Gil scored to only Galician goal. In this season, CD Tenerife managed to go up to the first division.
The next time they came face to face was in the remembered game for the ascension. After the 0-0 achieved in the Heliodoro, the blue and white islanders needed a good game not to return to the second division. Against adversity, in a full stadium with a hostile audience, Eduardo Ramos, with a header, saved Tenerife.
Since then, whenever the teams have encountered themselves in the first division, CD Tenerife has never managed a win. the first game in the elite finished with a 1-1 draw after goals by Felipe & Claudio.
The following year, they drew again, this time with 2-2. Ezequiel Castillo & Dertycia scored for the visitors, whilst Fran & Bebeto did the same for their team. This year, the 92/93, both teams had good results, finishing with the Galicians in third place and the Canarians in fifth.
On the 17 of April in 1994, Deportivo won for the first time in the first division. Claudio Barragán scored two goals, whilst CD Tenerife finished with 10 as Dertycia was sent off. In that season, The Cournian team lost the league in the last round in a game against Valencia. The title went to FC Barcelona.
The 4-1 of the 94-95 season saw a “hat trick” from Bebeto. Then there were two draws and two losses. The penultimate visit by CD Tenerife to Riazor in a league game occurred on the 14 of March in 1999. With goals from Djalminha andl Turu Flores, Irureta players won by 2-0.
The teams last visit to Riazor saw a loss. On the 24 of March the game (3-1) saw Javier Clemente deserve more. Lussenhoff scored after 30 minutes. Scaloni equalised with 15 minutes left to play and in the last seconds Scaloni y Makaay sentenced the game.
