El Tenerife volvió a ser perjudicado, en Gran Canaria, con otra controvertida actuación arbitral. Además de algunos fueras de juego señalados incorrectamente, y que privaron al Tenerife de plantarse mano a mano con Barbosa, el principal error del colegiado andaluz Jorge Figueroa Vázquez se produjo en la segunda mitad, cuando, cerca del minuto 80 de partido, no vió un claro penalti de Barbosa sobre Aridane. El meta argentino salió a por un balón aéreo, pero no midió bien su salida, y su puño acabó impactando en la cara de Aridane Santana, al que derribó, claramente, en la frontal del área pequeña.

Making beds

Funny title for a football post more usual for housekeeping or housewives. There is a saying in Spain that players can make a bed for their coach.(Trying to get him sacked) I am not sure if that is what happened yesterday but there was talk in the stands in Leganes that this is what the players were doing. It was a terrible game and was televised and the highlights can be seen here. I don't really want to talk any more about the match itself.

One of the things I love about following CDT is the friendships I have made. People I would never have met without the team. Leaving the hotel in the company of four lads from the Irish Clan the newest formed CDT fan Club, walking along the road being joined but a Brit from Armada Sur. A little further down the road we were joined by Paccuco from Barcelona and when we reached the grounds there were two more from Madrid itself and a couple from the UK. Football is not just hooligans it is great people who travel out of their way to see their team.

The fans me included were very down after the game and we left the grounds with the plan to go strainght to the airport to wait for our flight when a message came in on the phone saying why don't we have lunch. This was the best part of the day and we spent the time with Antonio and the three other lads from the Irish Clan talking about CDT and various other clubs, the island and other away games we had been at. Four nicer lads I haven't met and I look forward to seeing them on other trips. They are above us in Herradura by the big screen and I think they will grow as a fan club as they have some great ideas.

Calderon talks after loss against CD Marino

Antonio Calderón was interviewed after the game against CD Marino. The CD Tenerife coach commented on the team, “They worked well. There are things that need to be improved and because of this we have the loss but we controlled our rival and they did a good job. We tried various things. Physically they are in good condition and there technical tactics are improving”.
The trainer from Cadiz talked about the match, “They scored from a still ball. We didn't defend the corner well and they scored. The 1-0 could have been avoided. That said the team fought hard, looked for the equaliser, achieved this and I feel a second goal would have been fair but it wasn't to be”.
On this vein Calderon continued. “I can see that the team wants to win, they tried to dominate the rival, they were brave, daring and we need to insist on this. Now we need to correct our errors but we had chances to score. Now we need to correct the mistakes, but we have had clear chances to score and importantly that those chances were generated“.
Concerning the performance of Álvaro Zazo and David Medina, the coach from Andalusia pointed out that “they are players who have arrived later. In a new team we need to integrate them as soon as possible. The minutes that they played were good for them and for the team”.
Lastly he was asked about the signings that are not finalised, Antonio Calderon admitted that “We are missing a minimum of three players still. They are working on this and these games are good to know exactly what positions we need to sign players for. We have this mostly clear and we hope to find what we are missing for the team”, he finished.

On the positive side Melli has left the team, he hasn't signed for anyone else but has terminated his contract with the club.

This was a blow, in a game where during the first half the team looked better. Where passes seemed to flow from the defense to the forwards. Where there were shots at goal. Such a blow it left the fans reeling. The stadium was mostly quiet not even whistles were heard. The fans just waited to the end to leave. Many felt last weeks game was the turning point and not just a place to work from. All the team has now, is more hard work.

Alejandro Alfaro was in the stadium to watch the game by his ex-collegues.

4th league loss this season

 The fans had hoped this would be the game which turned the season around. Their displeasure could be heard or not. The Frente Blanquiazul started the game with a silent protest with both not singing and sitting down. Towards the end of the game when the loss was clear there were calls to the president for a solution, for Arconada to go and then finally the stadium called for Oltra.

Painful loss against Rayo Vallecano

 A direct fight into Madrid gave 200 CD Tenerife fans the chance to see their team away in Vallecas in the south end of the city. In a filled enthuastic stadium the fans watched their team play for a draw and the plan nearly worked. With only 4 minutes to go Rayo Vallecano player Juli scored a late goal and there ended Tenerife's hopes for the day. The next game is at home against Celta de Vigo. The players and the club need the fans to be there and support them in what is turning out to be a bad start to a hopeful season.

CD Tenerife 1 - UD Salamanca 2

This wasn't how it was meant to be. The start of the season. The first home game. Everyone was there with maximum enthusiasm. The zoneros had a giant Tifo with "together we can make it back to the first division". The Frente Blanquiazul had hold-ups signs with the number of season ticket holders for the last years. The final figures haven't been anounced but at Saturday lunchtime over 13,000 season tickets had been sold. Thursday new sales start again for anyone who still needs a season ticket.
There in the stadium the fans awaited their heros and it seemed to start well with Natalio scoring his first goal for the team putting the score at 1-0. But it wasn't to be. Salamanca scored two goals and here we have the worst start to the league since 59/60

Out of the kings cup Elche CF 4 - CD Tenerife 1

 The players in the cup were not the same players as the ones on Saturdays game against Girona. The result though was the same 4-0. The team will I am sure be glad to come home after their week away on the Spanish mainland.
The players return to Tenerife today and start training for the game against Salamanca tomorrow.

We had to lose at some point

There had to be a game we lost in pre-season and the first game of the island seems as good a one as any. Against a team who were in the middle of the first division last year a 2-1 loss wasn't bad.

The next game is on friday against Orihuela, a team in 2B.

It wasn't to be Valencia 1 - CD Tenerife 0

Well I haven't cried for a couple of hours so I thought I might try to write here how I feel. We were so hopeful. Arriving in Valencia on Friday night we had the chance on Saturday to look around the city, including the new stadium that will be finished when Valencia finds some more money. It's not just us with money worries although theirs are bigger then ours.
The city is lovely and the people we talked to all hoped we would do well in the game on Sunday.

The players on Sunday morning when they took their walk seemed calm.

 There were smiles and they stopped to chat and sign an awesome display that two fans had drawn.

There was a fan meeting in one of the plazas in the centre of town and hundreds of people were there. Singing and supporting CD Tenerife.

The match started at 7pm and although the players tried their best, they couldn't save themselves. There was unilt the 9+ minute a hope that real Mwould score a second goal and then we would have been saved but in extra time Alexis scored and that was relegation for CD Tenerife.

Weekend in Madrid

If only we had won the weekend would have been perfect.
Saturday morning saw us in Tenerife airport on aour way to Madrid again for the away game against Atletico Madrid. The flight was plain sailing and we had another "ontime" flight with Ryanair.


The afternoon flew by and we headed into the city centre to find the others but it wasn't to be. I should have remembered in the Irish bar in Sol the noise level is so bad that no one can hear their phone.
Sunday saw us again on our way into Sol and this time we found some of the other fans from Armada Sur. Some were more fragile but everyone was having a good time.
Slowly we moved twards the stadium where my son met up with his friends who are at universtiy in Madrid and that was the last we saw of him for several hours.
We stopped with several other Tenerife fans to have a drink in one of the bars outside the stadium and were invloved in a long conversation with Athletic fans about which team Atleti would be better playing in the final of the Europa League if they made the made the next round.
We moved into the stadium with high hopes but it wasn't to be. Maybe it was the stadium or the players just couldn't on the day. Atletico scored 2 goals. We had chances, Ayoze hit the goal post in the first 10 minutes but their defence was strong and it seemed when we reached their goal area there were 7 or 8 defending. In the second half Roman scored with a pass from Dinei and it seemed that we might be able to equalise but there you go then Aguero scored a third goal for Atletico Madrid and that was it. The Atletico ultra fans decided it would be fun to shout "Your going down to the second division" and that hurt. Maybe though it did our team a favor as the Tenerife fans went from complete silence to strong support as the game finished.
We need now to look forward to Saturdays game against Racing de Santander which we need to win.

Played in the stadium El Calderón. The grass was in good condition. Warm afternoon. With some 40.000 spectators of which about 700 were from CD Tenerife. One minutes silence was held for Juan Antonio Samaranch, ex president of the Olympic comitee. The day had been announced as the day of the children for the club and there had been activities including three air force parachutists landing on the field before the start of the game.

The B team had a win which took them out of relegation.
