Presentation

tation

Gonzalo Arconada was officially presented Tuesday as the new trainer for Club Deportivo Tenerife. This act took place in the Press zone of the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium and also present from the club were CD Tenerife president, Miguel Concepción; and Sports director, Santiago Llorente. Presented with Gonzalo Arconada was the second coach , José Ramón Eizmendi (an ex CD Tenerife player) and physical trainer Sergi Pérez. Both of these men arrived with Gonzalo Arconada, having worked with him in Numancia.

Miguel Concepción was the first to speak welcoming Gonzalo Arconada and his team.
“Arconada”, he described his ample experience as a trainer, both in Numancia and in other clubs including Almería and Real Sociedad. He stated that Arconada had managed to take Numancia up to the first division. That he fits the criteria the club was looking for in a trainer and this was why the club had decided he would be our best option for this season."

He then commented further on next season saying, "The presentation of our new trainer starts the beginning of the project 2010-2011, we hope that the fans will start to believe in the club again and that they will see that the club and the players will fight to go back to the first division. I guarantee we will have a competitive team and our objective will be to be in the highest ranking from the beginning."
To conclude the President from La Palma stated " we now have a competent trainer and only need the sports director to fill team with the players we are missing. I hope this will be as soon as possible and before pre-season training starts. I hope the fans will show confidence in the institution and continue to support the team. We are sure to make them happy and be a winning team."

Arconada continued to talk after the blue and white president. The points he covered include

Thanks.- “In the first instance I wish to thank the club for the interest they have shown in me. And for the support I have received on behalf of the city and the fans. I hope to respond to all this confidence you have in me."

Reasons for signing.- “CD Tenerife is an important club in professional football in Spain. The offer fills me with pride and satisfaction that I was chose to lead this new drive to take the team back to the fist division as soon as possible. The agreement was quick on both sides.”

Aims.- “I take this quest without any complexes. We are all winners and should be very ambitious because of this our aim should be to go back to the first division. We shouldn't be afraid to talk of this aim. What we need to do first is make the team competitive. We don't need to speak of what will happen in June only concentrate in the day by day work which will make the final result we need. There is a long path to follow and it will have good moments and bad ones. We need to avoid falling into states of euphoria or depression. We need to have confidence and perseverance in our job.”

Nino.- “He is a great footballer, very important and his staying is fundamental for the club. He can score many goals and good players are always highly valued in a good squad. He will be an important part of the team.”

Marc Bertrán.- “We are counting on all our players who are under contract. Always some names will be more important than others and we believe those players will be important players in the team next year.”

Player signings.- “I will be talking to Santiago Llorente about the players need for the team. We have similar opinions in the talks so far.It is important that the club knows the sort of player I am looking for but I have every confidence that the knowledge and experience Santiago Llorente brings to the job will prove successful when the team is formed.”

Ideal team.- “We need to make a competitive team with winners who will inspire the fans and can add points both away and in the Heliodoro. I am sure that at home with the support of the fans we will continue to be a strong team and I hope that we will have the same fortress as two seasons ago which would be an enormous factor in ascending the team to the first division.”

Philosophy of the game.- “I like to see a team who plays the ball, who have control of the game and we will be looking for players who have those skills. We need to build a team who are competitive and intense. There needs to be a balance between aggressive play and at the same time good ball skills to reach the final objective scoring goals. The aim of ball possession is the medium to score gaols it is not an aim on its own. Although if you have the ball your opponents cant run with it and score gaols against you.”

Message to the fans.- “This level is very complicated, as every year. The message we need to transmit to the fans is confidence and from the beginning we need your help without fail. We need you to believe in us because we will work hard ourselves. We need you to have faith and we will try that you do not feel betrayed at any moment for the level of play and the competivity the team will show.”.

Lastly Santiago Llorente spoke to clear up various items. When asked about Nino and Marc Bertran he declared there had been some interest in various players but that the clubs idea was that the players under contract stayed with the team.

He then added that Gonzalo Arconada had signed with CD Tenerife for one season but if all was well he couldn't see any problem in continuing the relationship. If not then their paths will follow other routes. "From the beginning the both sides understand what we are doing and I am sure that our relationship will continue for many seasons." he finished.

Interview with Pablo Sicilia

At the start of his fifth season in CD Tenerife Pablo Sicilia talks in an interview for the club website. The player from Gran Canaria has played most of the minutes in the previous seasons. He has proved again and again a player who fits in and is always of use to the team.

How are your holidays?
Good, I am making the most of this time with my family. I was away for two weeks and now I am in Gran Canaria, between the south and the Capital.

Now we have a new trainer: Gonzalo Arconada. Do you know him?
I know where he has trained but not much more than that. But once we start to work with him we will see how he works. I guess he will be wanting to work hard when he gets here.

Next season there will be play offs to go up. What do you think about this?
I was surprised, but it is good that the first tow go directly up. What is clear there will be a bigger fight for the teams to go up. Many teams stop trying towards the end of the year as they see no chance to go up. Now there is a chance for the first six teams which will leave the league much more open .

What do you expect for the following year?
Above everything I like the chance we have to fight for something big. The team has the chance for good results after the difficult times last year. Those of us who are here need to help those who arrive fresh to adapt. The fans must be happy to see a new team. What I am sure is we will achieve a competitive group.

There is a good base for the start. Don't you think? Players with Experience?
Some of the players have been several years with the club. This makes things easier but we need to adapt well and regain the confidence of the fans.

Even with the relegation, last season you were one of the players who played most minutes. How do see the season?
This was my first season at the highest level. I played quite a bit as I had in previous years. Performing in great stadiums against great teams and outstanding players. The real pity was we couldn't keep our place in the first division.

Now a month has passed since the end of the season. What feelings do you have about the group?
I am left with the union between the group right to the last minute to achive our aim. We fought together right to the end.

As mentioned yesterday

As mentioned yesterday in my rumours blog Gonzalo Arconada Echarri has been named today at 14.00 by CD Tenerife as their trainer for the next season.

Gonzalo Arconada Echarri will be CD Tenerife's first trainerfor the season 2010/2011
The trainer is at present training CD Numancia. He was born on the 15th of October 1961 in San Sebastián. He has trained Real Unión, Tolosa, Beasaín,Real Sociedad B, Real Sociedad, Burgos, CD Numancia from the second division to the first division, Alemeria in the first division and CD numancia for a second time.

He has his last game with Numancia on Saturdayas trainer of CD Numancia and will travel to Tenerife at the begining of next week. He will be bringing with him his second in command José Ramón Eizmendi & phyisical trainer Sergi Pérez to sign their contracts and be officially presented by the club.

There was also a note on the Club website that Gonzalo Arconada will not be giving a press conference before his presentation. The club then thanked all media for their understanding.

Rumours

The internet and the newspapers are awash with rumours but very little in the way of facts.

Trainer - Various sources including newspapers El Dia and Diario de Avisos have stated that our new trainer will be Gonzalo Arconada. What is certain is yesterday he gave an interview and said he will not be renewing with Numancia and he says he has a new club to go to. I hope we will hear something from the club this coming week and if not next week after the second division is finished.

Players - Where to start, there have been rumours about players coming including Mendoza, Casado, Alex Quillo, Chechu Dorado  and Barkero. There have been rumour about players returning including; Mista, Jesus Vasquez and Vitolo.

Hector and Angel have decided not to stay with CD Tenerife. Hector because he feels he has better offers elsewhere and Ángel because he wants to play more to improve his game and CD Tenerife can't be sure they will have space for him to play more minutes. There are rumours that Hector has an offer from Villareal B and Ángel from Celta de Vigo so we may well see both player this season visiting with their new teams.
There is a rumour that we are going to swap Roman and money for Marc Bertran with Español.

What is certain is the club is now negotiating with Ruben Rosquete for a professional contract.

Trainer Jose Luis Oltra is apparently in talks with recently descended Valladolid who are also looking for a trainer for their first team after the club decided not to renew with Javier Clemente.

Miguel Concepción talks to the fans.

Yesterday morning Club president Miguel Concepción was in the offices of local newspaper La Opinión de Tenerife, to answer fans questions sent in by internet about the up to date goings on in the blue and white club.

Miguel Concepción answered the questions given and tried to be open and honest with the fans. The businessman for La Palma was asked about aspects of the clubs sporting & institutional plans and he then defended his efforts as president of C D Tenerife.

The president of the team commented on the near future of the club. He explained that the club is going to build a team to aspire to return to the first division. That you can never be sure this is what will happen but that the aim of the club is to return to Primera next summer.

Trainer - When he was asked about trainer José Luis Oltra, Miguel Concepción stated that both the team council and the sports director coincided in the thought that it was time for a change in Tenerife and that they wanted to start a new project with many new players and a new training team. Above all the president was clear when he said "Until I have a signed contract nothing is sure, we continue to look to sign a trainer who fulfills the characteristics we are looking for. Don't forget the second division is not finished. There are trainers who are not working and others who will be leaving their jobs when the season is completed.

Youth teams - The fact that several of the members of the team who had come up through the youth teams have left this year was a question from several people. Concepción answered " We plan to continue to promote the youth teams and work with our young players but we also have to respect that there are players who will want to leave Tenerife as they see their future as being better in another team. We will continue to work the way we are at present." In another question he responded "Our aim has always been to support our youth players but the places in the first team have to be filled by the best players we have for the spot. This is what makes the team competitive"

Fans - The maximum boss of CD Tenerife defended his position in the club with comments that the fans supported him and the team. His words included " I know that in a large group of fans there will always be some who do not have this feeling but generally the fans want me to be president."

Finances -When asked about the financial situation the club finds itself in Miguel Concepción revealed that although being relegated has meant that the entity doesn't think they will be able to reduce the debt next year, three years at the highest level will allow the club to reduce the debt to zero. This is partly why the club is going to make the enormous effort to return to the first division as soon as possible. He also discussed the hope that this year the club will be fused with the promotora a separate entity to the club itself.

When asked about Nino the president stated that there were on going negotiations and that he felt they were going well. He repeated that he hoped Nino will finish his career here in Tenerife.

Luanvi

Although it hasn't been anounced on the club website Luanvi  have stated they have taken over the contract to clothe the team.
This Valencia based company are named after their three owners Luis, Antonio and Vincente. The company strated in the seventies as a maker of fancy dress costumes. The most popular of their costumes were football strips. Form that start they actually moved into making real strips.
Companies they have made strips for include Valencia CF, Villarreal CF, Mallorca CF, & Hércules CF.
They have promised an inovative second strip as they feel legally they cannot make a shirt with the cross from the Tenerife flag due to copyrite laws

Fan support

The fans were there this year supporting their team tirelessly. This year more than others the support for the fans has proved a turning factor in several games in the home stadium Heliodoro Rodríguez López in the Primera league of the BBVA.

At no time were there less than 15,000 fans in the stadium for any league game which was a substantial reason for the 30 home points gained stated the club website yesterday. The home win points was the highest of any team between 12th and 20th position in the classification of the league

In the end the stadium received more then 350 thousand visitors in total 350.302 which is a record in CD Tenerife's history. This is an average of 18.436 spectators per game, which is almost eighty per cent of the available seats in the Santa Cruz stadium.

The game which received most visitors was Tenerife-FC Barcelona, with 22.510 people; beating by 387 the game where José Luis Oltra's team played the other classic Spanish team Real Madrid, where there were 22.123 spectators.

The gates were over 20,000 another five times starting with the game against Club Atlético de Madrid, when there were 21.414 fans; and when Valencia visited, with 21.366.
Also the mass of fans were present in other games including the ones against Athletic de Bilbao (20.622), Sevilla (20.552) & finally Almería (20.810).

The 17,000 season ticket holders and the relationship between the team and the stands caused this success. A relationship which started in the year the team ascended to the first division. And the club are sure it will be repeated in the season 2010-2011 when CD Tenerife will try again to recuperate their place in the highest level.

Seasons statistics

At the end of the season looking back here are some of the good points about the year with some of the players figures for their time in the first division.

This season is now finished and here are some of the good aspects of the season both for CD Tenerife and for the players. The first figure for the team is that the result for the end of play most frequent was 1-1. This occurred in 45 occasions. In the whole league the Tenerife team were awarded 4 penalties, two of these were converted into goals and two missed. Against CD Tenerife there were 5 penalties which were all converted into goals. The blue and white team were the team with most passes into the goal area (1,202), followed by Osasuna and Sevilla respectively.

Nino was the third highest national goal scorer equally with Llorente they scored 14 goals, (only Villa had more.)  He scored 11 with his right foot and three with headers. The CD Tenerife forward was the field player who played the most minutes with a total of 3,360 minutes played ( the whole league with the exception of 60 minutes in round 36 the Barcelona-CD Tenerife game.) This was followed by Capdevilla (Villarreal CF) who was missing 109 minutes and Iraola (Ath. Bilbao) with 141 minutes.

Other interesting information about Angel who played 24 games and in all he started on the bench. He was the substitute who played in most games (24) followed by Antoñito (Xerez 23), Raúl (R. Madrid 22) and Dinei who also played in 22 games as sub and one he started.

Finally as players substituted Aranda (Osasuna) was changed 24 times, De La Cuevas (S. Gijón 22) and JuanLu 21 times.

When numbers are counted then keeper Sergio Aragoneses should be included. He was the only player in CD Tenerife who played the full 38 rounds accumulating a total of 3.420 oficial minutes.

Possible Defender

 The first possible new player.

CD Tenerife has aparently asked about the left footed defender in Sociedad Deportiva Huesca. The player is called Chechu Dorado.
After the team decided not to renew the contracts of  José Antonio Culebras & Manolo Martínez defenders will be needed. Information released last night by Canarias Radio La Autonómica informed that the club has been in contact with the 27 year old player. In this season he has played 38 games and last season he played 39 games. All of the games he played form the start. He has been on of the most important players for trainer Antonio Calderón. The player has also played as a left defender. As well as playing the last few years in Huesca he played in lower teams in Córdoba and in Zaragoza, as well as playing in UE Lleida between 2004 & 2007.

Interview with Mikel Alonso.

Q. After your first few days of your holiday, how do you see the last season?

A. On one hand based on the fact we were relegated that is what counts. On the other hand we played well, there were all the games we won. But finally you are left with a bitter taste to return to the second division. We were in with a chance until the end we played really good football. It is a terrible shame.

Q. You are a player with experience in the elite division. Have you ever played a season which was a equal at the bottom as this year?

A. It is more or less normal. I can remember other years that were this close. People make mistakes and sometimes this causes problems and the other way around; teams who seem to have no hope and at the end manage to keep their head above water. The end of the league is always hard although perhaps not as hard as this year. We were in with a chance to the end.

Q. And personally, after a year and a half here, how do you see things?

A. I am very happy here in the group, with the club, with the trainers and the day by day training. I like the city and the island. When I arrived here the team were in the second division and I didn't manage to play a lot as the group was already formed. Then from the beginning of this season I started to play. This time has been great above all because of the great level of the team.

Q. How do you see the next season in the second division having been relegated?

A. I don't know. I can't tell how it will be next season. Right now my plan is to rest but I am sure as with every year we will be excited to start to play when the time comes.

Q.This year you have almost two months holidays. What sort of preparations will you take during this time?

A. In this sense I am very lucky, I don't tend to have any trouble with weight and I find it very easy to get fit again. This could be because I am always active. I try to enjoy my holidays like every normal person. Then with training little by little I start to get a rhythm.
